  • In the innovative Work and Learn, 3 and 2 model, students have the opportunity to pursue their Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) certification by attending classes three days a week and engaging in paid employment within the continuing care sector for two days a week. This unique format of the Progressive Education Continuing Care Assistant program will be accessible in Sydney, Dartmouth, and various rural locations across the province. For Nova Scotia residents who meet the eligibility criteria, this program offers a comprehensive package covering tuition, administrative and exam fees, and textbooks, at no cost to the participant! The Work and Learn, 3 and 2 CCA program begins with approximately eight weeks of classroom-based learning. Following this initial phase, students transition to the combined work and learn schedule. The curriculum is designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to provide compassionate care to the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and those recovering from illnesses. A preliminary interview may be conducted to determine suitability for clinical experience. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation to and from clinical placements and work experiences. The role demands flexibility with shift work and the physical capability to perform tasks such as moving, lifting, and extended periods of standing.

Participants will gain the expertise required to aid dentists during all types of dental procedures commonly carried out in general dental practices, as well as deliver personalized patient education and treatments as permitted within the dental assistant’s scope of practice in Nova Scotia. Hosted at our Sydney campus, the Dental Assisting program blends classroom learning with clinical instruction, includes rotations in dental offices, and culminates in a work-term placement. This approach ensures students gain exposure to a variety of dental office environments and practice areas, preparing them for a versatile career in dental assistance.
  • The practice of pharmacy has evolved beyond traditional dispensing functions. Therefore, the need for knowledgeable, technically skilled and competent support personnel is paramount. The Pharmacy Assistant program is designed to train Pharmacy Assistants to assist registered pharmacists or pharmacy technicians in community and hospital settings in their respective drug distribution systems. In addition to practical training using a commercial computer system, skills in communication and interpersonal relations will be developed. The program is 31 weeks in duration and includes 6 weeks of practicum placement.
