Culinary Arts Programs

  • Course Description

    FOODSAFE Level 1 is a food handling, sanitation and work safety course, which covers important food safety and worker safety information including food-borne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing. Health care workers, who may prepare, serve meals or assist with feeding clients would benefit from this course. FoodSafe certificate is a mandatory requirement before practicum participation or employment in a health care setting.

  • Healthcare Assistant Program Overview

    This healthcare assistant program is designed to train learners to become Health Care Professionals. Our dedicated and experienced instructors will provide quality education with hands-on training to prepare students for the real world. Students will practice their techniques in labs equipped with articulated mannequins, hospital beds, medical gear and fixtures. Furthermore, students will participate at a designated facility or a hospital and interact with patients throughout the practicum training period. This healthcare assistant training program will help students learn proficiency and the confidence most needed on a job. Our graduates work in both private and publicly funded facilities and hospitals as well as a variety of community settings. These may include extended care, intermediate care, assisted living, acute care hospitals, home support, rehabilitation facilities, and group homes. HCAs work as part of a team within a health care unit under the supervision of a health care professional such as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.

    This program is the accelerated version of the Health Care Assistant program in Gateway College. Students receive the same training and credentials, but complete their studies within six months! Our dedicated and experienced instructors will provide quality education with hands-on training to prepare students for the real world. Students will practice their techniques in labs equipped with articulated mannequins, hospital beds, medical gear and fixtures. Furthermore, students will participate at a designated facility or a hospital and interact with patients throughout the practicum training period. This training will help students learn proficiency and the confidence most needed on a job. These may include extended care, intermediate care, assisted living, home support, rehabilitation facilities, and group homes.     The Health Care Assistant – Access Program is ideal for those who have prior learning or work experience in the field, and would like to refresh or update their skills and knowledge to meet and exceed the BC Provincial Standards. This health care assistant program will help learners to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to function effectively as Health Care Assistants. Successful graduates will be able to provide person-centered care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients/residents. Graduates from this program will work as part of a team within a health care team under the supervision of a health care professional such as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. The graduates can work in both private and publicly funded facilities and hospitals as well as a variety of community settings. These may include extended care, intermediate care, acute care, assisted living, home support, rehabilitation facilities, and group homes.

    This program is ideal for international students, or new immigrants whose do not speak English as a first language. It is also suitable for students without a health care background who are not familiar with medical terminology. Year 1 - offers Progressive English Training, which will help you achieve the necessary language requirement to enter the second year. Year 2 - provides Health Care Career Training, which includes training in medical terminology, and skills and knowledge in taking care of young, mothers, elderly, family, and those with disabilities and chronic illness. If language proficiency requirements are met, applicants can apply and may be directly accepted into the second year.

    This program is designed to enhance the knowledge and skill of learners to work with older adults in order to effectively meet the needs of the aging population. This program will focus on gaining a greater understanding of the physical, social, cognitive and spiritual needs of the older adults, and the challenges faced by our aging population. Our dedicated and experienced instructors will provide quality education with hands-on training to prepare students for the real world. Students will practice their techniques in labs equipped with articulated mannequins, hospital beds, medical gear and fixtures. Furthermore, students will participate at a designated facility or a hospital and interact with patients throughout the practicum training period and 12 weeks of Co-op period. This training will help students learn proficiency and the confidence most needed on a job. Our graduates work in both private and publicly funded facilities and hospitals as well as a variety of community settings that includes extended care, intermediate care, assisted living, acute care hospitals, home support, rehabilitation facilities and group homes. HCAs work as part of a team within a health care unit under the supervision of a health care professional such as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.

  • Program Overview

    This 85-week PGDNP program is designed to prepare Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to adapt to Canadian health care setting combining theory and skills based on the entry-level competencies for Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics. Furthermore, it will help learners to advance the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to function effectively as Health Care Assistants (HCAs), LPN and/or RN as well as to develop critical thinking skills and acquire knowledge in becoming a culturally competent nurse while providing care. It will also prepare IENs for Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN), Additional Assessment, National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE).
  • Course Description

    Advanced Medication Delivery Program is designed for care aides who want to get Medication Administration training to work in a variety of settings such as Assisted Living Facilities, Long-term Care Facilities and Home Support Agencies. Learners can learn about medication delivery through participation in this course. This program does not require approval by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training. As such, the registrar did not review this program.

    Learning Outcomes

    Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
    • Identify the role in assisting with medications.
    • Identify guidelines to follow when assisting with medications.
    • Summarize how drugs work in the body.
    • List the “right” of assisting with medications.
    • List the factors that affect drug action.
    • Summarize what you would do if you made a medication error.
    • List the different forms of medications.
    • Outline the main responsibilities when assisting with medications.
    • Differentiate between assisting with medications and administering medications.
    • Apply the procedures.

  • Course Description

    Dementia Professional Course is designed for caregivers of persons with dementia. Caregivers may include family members as well as staff working in nursing homes, assisted living programs, adult day center programs, home support agencies, hospitals, hospice care and other settings providing care to persons with dementia.

    First Aid & CPR training is mandatory for employees in the workplace; but unlike most other types of safety training, these skills and knowledge are also applicable to an individual’s daily life. This is why we teach people First Aid & CPR in easy-to-follow steps, empowering them to act on, prevent, and manage life’s emergencies.

  • Course Description

    This 4-week program effectively prepares Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) for the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) examination. It is designed to prepare learners through comprehensive and intensive lessons and guided practice in all areas of the CELBAN exam including reading, writing, listening, speaking and test taking strategies. The program will help learners be familiar with the expectations, format, and content of the CELBAN test as well as improving their English skills and abilities.
