    The Early Childcare Assistant (ECA) program is designed to equip childcare workers with valuable knowledge, skills and experience for employment as assistants in daycares or early learning centers. This program gives the students an overview of the responsibility of an early childcare assistant and opportunities to perform those responsibilities. The program presents foundational skills needed for those seeking to move into an Early Childhood Educator program. ECA program is designed with an aim to train students and provide required skills and knowledge for employment as Early Childcare Assistants in Early Childcare Centers, child support at home or assist an Early Childcare Educators. The program requires the students to take an on-the-job training at the designated Child Care Centers. This hands-on training equips the student further with the practical knowledge to succeed in the field of their study. For those who are aiming to start their own Childcare Centers, this program lays a solid foundation for them to pursue their career as Early Childhood Educator.     Program Outline:
    Early Childcare Assistant – The Diploma in Early Childcare Assistant at CIMT College prepares students for position as an Early Childcare Assistant. During this program of study, the students gains both theoretical and practical training in the required courses. Introduction to Early Child Care and Education – presents an overview of Early Child Care and Education. Students gain an appreciation of the historical development of child care and its impact on contemporary approach to care and curriculum. Roles and Responsibilities – presents with the professional expectations of early childcare workers, including the roles and responsibilities, attitudes, ethical standards and advocacy issues. Child, Family and Community – gives an in-depth look at the Canadian Family and the challenges facing families. Students will gain an understanding of community based support programs available to assist families who are facing specific challenges. Introduction to Child Development – gives an understanding of historical and contemporary theories of development, developmental domains and research approaches to child development. Introduction to Prenatal and Infant Development – gives an understanding of historical and contemporary theories of development, developmental domains and research approaches to prenatal and infant development. Introduction to Toddler Development – gives an understanding of historical and contemporary theories of development, developmental domains and research approaches to toddler development. Introduction to Preschool Development – gives an understanding of historical and contemporary theories of development, developmental domains and research approaches to preschooler’s development. Observation Skills – introduces the roles of the observer and a variety of approaches to observing developments in children. Guiding Children – introduces to the dimensions of care giving and positive developmentally appropriate techniques for guiding the children. Curriculum Planning – introduces various approaches to curriculum and theories of learning. Various elements of curriculum are introduced, including activities and themes, circle time and center activities. Written Communication – course presents with the skills to improve the proficiency in written communication and documentation in a child care setting. Health and Safety – this course presents with the concepts and strategies for developing and maintaining a safe and healthy child care setting. Nutrition – this module looks at various factors that affect young children’s eating habits and stresses encouraging positive and healthy eating habits. Practicum – Students gain experience working with children of all age, infants to preschoolers.

Early childhood educator assistants provide care for infants and preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of early childhood educators.     Job Functions
    Early childhood assistants perform some or all of the following duties:
    • Support early childhood educators in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
    • Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing crafts
    • Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods
    • Assist with proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
    • Submit written observations on children to early childhood educators or supervisors
    • Maintain daycare equipment and assist in housekeeping and cooking duties
    • Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children
    • Assist early childhood educators or supervisors in keeping records.
     
    Job Requirements?
    Job openings in the field of early childhood assistant usually seek a person who has completed a college diploma. Since majority of the early childcare centers look for certification, additional certification and a practice license will be an asset. While entry level jobs ask for no experience or one to two years experience, higher positions can be sought for once you gain some practical experience in the actual workplace.

  • Program Overview
    The  (PSW) program teaches you skills that allow you to take care of residents in healthcare environments.  Personal support workers assist people who may have disabilities and are unable to look after themselves by ensuring that their basic hygiene needs are fulfilled so that they may lead dignified lives. They also support residents’ independence regarding medication, mobility and provide informal counseling when needed. The New NACC personal support worker program in Hamilton, ON, taught at Grand Health Academy is based upon the Ontario Personal Support Worker Training Standard which provides all graduates with a complete and comprehensive certificate which is recognized in all of Canada. The revision of the training prepares the Support Workers to meet the current needs and preferences of clients/consumers as well as the changing demands of their work environments and was a joint initiative of the Ontario Government and the Ontario Community Support Association. This training program consolidates and replaces existing Health Care Aide, Home Support Worker Levels II, and III training programs.   • Program Summary
    Pharmacy Assistants, also referred to as pharmacy aides or assistant pharmacists, work with pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in a variety of settings, from retail stores to hospitals. Pharmacy Assistants perform administrative duties and work directly with customers to meet their prescription needs. The GHA Pharmacy Assistant program prepares you for duties such as:
    • assisting the pharmacist in the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy
    • filling medication orders including measuring, mixing, packaging, labeling and delivering drugs
    • managing inventory including monitoring, restocking, expired products and inventory records
    • receiving written prescriptions and inputting prescriptions into the computer system

    Enabling the PSW with qualifications. The Medication Administration for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) program trains individuals in all aspects of dealing with medication in any work environment. You learn about the laws, administration routes, protocols, types of medication and how a PSW can protect themselves within the work environment when medication is part of their scope. This program also enables the PSW to give medication in a safe manner.
    Skills Aquired:
    • The PSW will gain knowledge in the common medication administered by a PSW;
    • The PSW will acquire accurate information on the legal aspect of administering medication including the controlled Acts in Ontario;
    • The PSW will obtain, develop and master the different skills necessary in medication administration;

    Phlebotomy is a technological medical discipline which involves drawing blood from patients for blood analysis by using various techniques. Phlebotomists help doctors and nurses in patient care. Phlebotomist will be in demand for as long as there is blood to donate, diseases to fight and patients to treat, and in-fact there is a growing need for phlebotomists in Canada.
