Culinary Arts Programs

  • Metrocare Health Academy is proud to be working with TrainCan, an industry leader, to bring a Comprehensive full-day or two-evening training course in Basic Food Safety for those in the food industry or those working in jobs that may handle food, such as Personal Support Workers. The focus of this training is to produce the highest quality food possible while also minimizing the risks involved in food service. Trainees will receive a Basics Food Safety Training Certification upon completion.

Healthcare, Wellness, Pharma Programs

  • Program Overview

    Personal Support Workers (PSWs) work in Hospitals, Long-Term Care Facilities, Retirement Homes and Home Care Agencies assisting the elderly and people with disabilities with their tasks of daily living, including personal care, mobility, home management and socialization.

    Program Length

    The PSW program is 700 hours in length, including In-Class Theory and Skills Practice, Clinical Placement and a Final Examination. Ask us about our flexible class schedules.

    Theory (In-Class)

    Learn the fundamental knowledge and skills of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) through 12 exciting modules which include:

    • PSW Foundations

    • Safety & Mobility

    • Assisting with Personal Hygiene

    • Assisting with Medications

    • Mental Health

    • Health Conditions

    Clinical Placement

    Further your training by utilizing your knowledge and skills with local seniors. Just let us know your availability and we will assign you to one of our great host facilities which include long-term care facilities and retirement homes.

    Upon Completion

    Once completed, graduates will earn the following credentials necessary for working as a PSW:

    • MHA Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate

    • MHA Academic Transcript

    • NACC Certificate and PIN

  • Comprehensive one or two-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Includes the latest First-Aid and CPR guidelines. Meets federal and a variety of provincial/territorial regulations for Standard First Aid and CPR. Exceeds other standards by including injury prevention content, CPR and AED.

    Certification

    Red Cross 3-year certification in Standard First Aid, CPR (Level A, C, or HCP) and AED

    Recertification

    Those with current Red Cross certification can qualify for the recertification course.

    Requirement: Proof of current Standard First-Aid & CPR Certification

  • The Alzheimer Society’s Dementia Care Training Program is a 12-hour course (over 4 weeks) for enhancing knowledge and skills related to providing holistic care to persons with dementia. This program is excellent for Personal Support Workers, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Caregivers, Rehabilitation staff, students and volunteers whom work with seniors.


    Certification

    Trainees will receive a U-First! Certification upon completion.

    Course Content

    Over the 12 hour program, trainees will learn:
    • The nature and progression of Alzheimer's disease
    • The factors that contribute to responsive behaviours
    • The U-First! common language, values and team approach to managing responsive behaviours
    • The physical and sensory changes related to aging through an aging simulation.
