The Live in Caregiver (childcare) program is a training program that prepares students to work for Canadian families or organizations providing caregiving services for children. Students will gain essential skills, including knowledge of Canadian Culture, interpersonal communication skills, guiding children’s behaviour, and other health and safety related skills required to be a live-in caregiver.
There is increasing demand for Education Assistants (EAs) in the province of BC, and they are employed by every school district throughout the province. SELC Career College prepares students to work as EAs in a school setting where they will be supporting the development of individual students, participating in school-based team meetings, and helping design and implement Individualized Education Plans. The program includes both theoretical studies, observation and practical applications. More specifically, EAs assist school teachers and other staff as they work with students who may require additional support for academic, behavioral, and social emotional needs. For example, students who are facing various learning challenges: cognitive barriers, physical/mobility issues, severe/complex mental health conditions, and autism-related disorders.
SELC offers a PGND program designed to meet the need for internationally educated nurses (IEN) to be competent for nursing licensure and nursing practice positions in Canadian healthcare systems. The program's goal is to provide proper training to IEN to adapt to Canadian Nursing Practice Standards. This program facilitates IEN with extensive acquaintance and skills to meet clients' complex health needs in always progressing practice environments. The IEN's will participate in the assessment, analysis, advancement, application of practice and policy that directs care delivery. At the end of the program, IEN will acquire adequate knowledge about the Canadian Health Care System, the Canadian Nursing professions, licensing requirements, and available education and career pathways.

A Medical Office Assistant is an administrative professional who provides clerical and administrative support in medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics, and private practices. They play a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of medical offices by managing patient records, scheduling appointments, billing and coding, and performing other essential administrative tasks.
Students learn about medical terminology, medical billing and coding, electronic health records, patient scheduling, and other administrative tasks. The program also includes training in communication skills, patient interaction, and how to manage patient information, handle medical records, and work with insurance companies and other healthcare providers.
A new and in high demand position within hospitals, private surgical centers and acute care facilities is the Hospital Support Specialist. A key role is multitasking administrative and clerical duties across the hospital environment. Students in the Hospital Support Specialist will learn valuable skills for working in a hospital environment in administrative and clerical support roles.
The courses taught throughout the program are designed for applied learning and pragmatic application of skillsets. Taught by industry professionals, the learning throughout the courses is interwoven with very real-world examples and pragmatic applications of essentials skills.
Students will come away with a deepened understanding of the complex administrative structures of hospitals and requirements for clerical, administrative and supportive roles. They will acquire enhanced communication skills, technology for healthcare, admitting and registration of patients in various departments and/or hospital units, billing, documentation and patient data, clerical tasks, scheduling and handling patient charts.
The Health Care Assistant program at SELC College prepares students for a variety of opportunities in the health care field. This program helps students acquire the core skills and competencies required for the care of clients in a multi-level complex care settings, assisted living, group home and home care settings.
SELC’s Community Support Worker Social Services Program is for students who want to help build healthy communities, and support marginalized or vulnerable individuals. Students in this program learn vital skills such as interviewing and counselling skills, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. SELC students will also reflect on their own practice through self-exploration, personal growth and development. This program will prepare students to work with indigenous clients in an anti-oppressive environment; indigenous voices are infused throughout the program. Students will learn how to be an advocate for their clients, while promoting self-determination. The goal of this program is to train students to assist individuals who are in need of support for basic activities of daily living, mental health struggles, substance use, domestic violence, and any other concerns and issues that affect the development of the whole person.
The Addictions Worker program at SELC College offers students an opportunity to learn the vital skills necessary to support individuals struggling with addiction issues. Students will utilize their knowledge of issues pertaining to homelessness, addictions, mental health, women with children, domestic violence/abuse, and to act as a client advocate who provides emotional support.
A capacity to communicate and uphold clients’ rules, duties, and regulations in a polite but assertive manner is a major focus of this program. Our program supports a strength-based and harm reduction philosophy of intervention. As such, students will learn how to utilize the different harm reduction techniques in specialized contexts.
