• Business Administration – Payroll Accelerated

  This program is 20 weeks long and is concerned with employee pay, benefits, prepare and check statements of earnings and provide information to employees on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective agreement terms.

  This program covers the fundamentals of business in a way that allows participants to understand how business works and to develop the skills necessary to increase their ability to contribute to an organization’s success.

  HBSO CORe is a three-course cohort-based program designed to engage participants in active learning, whereby participants are expected to contribute to the learning of others. Concepts are taught in the context of real-world situations, designed to transform abstract concepts into observable learning situations. Students will complete the three-course HBSO CORe program during the in-class instruction of their studies.

  Graduates of this program will receive a diploma from Sprott Shaw College, as well as a Credential of Readiness from the Harvard Business School HBSO.

  The Sprott Shaw College Business Fundamentals diploma program is designed to provide the essential skills necessary to work in an office environment. This program is well suited for an individual that is looking for the shortest training to develop the core set of skills necessary to work in an office environment. People entering this program often have experience in another field or are entering the workforce for the first time.

  People planning to work in this competitive field require strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Those who have developed skills in these areas will be better prepared to compete for jobs. With additional experience or training, progression to management positions is possible.

  The Sprott Shaw College Operation diploma program provides a foundational understanding of business operations which equips graduates to manage activities in a wide variety of industries.

  You will be trained in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, sales and marketing, business communications and supervisory skills. These skills will give you the competence and ability to thrive in a business environment.

  After successful completion of your core courses, you will complete a paid 22-week business co-op. You final week of learning will focus on your Career & Professional Development course that will prepare you to write an effective cover letter and resume, to develop job interview skills and to learn how to search for job opportunities.

• Global Marketing Management with Co-op – HBSO CORe

  The Global Marketing Management with Co-op – HBSO CORe diploma program is a combination of Sprott Shaws’ relationship with two partners i.e., the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT), and Harvard Business School’s HBSO Credential of Readiness (CORe). This diploma program focuses on the development of business understanding, both domestically and internationally; emphasizing the skills necessary to align processes and resources and to improve communication, productivity and effectiveness.

  The students of this program benefit from the partnership with the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT).  FITT focuses on the practical aspects of international business, including logistics, nation-by-nation marketing opportunities, trade finance, market entry strategies and international management techniques. All FITT skills courses meet the standards of international business and trade training as prescribed by the International Association of Trade Training Organizations (IATTO). Successful completion of all eight FITT skills courses provides the student with a FITT Diploma, accredited by IATTO and satisfies the educational requirement for the CITP (Certified International Trade Professional) designation*.

  The second partnership is with the Harvard Business School HBSO Credential of Readiness (CORe) which provides business fundamentals for early-career high potentials and aspiring leaders to improve on the job performance. The CORe curriculum includes Business Analytics, Economics for Managers and Financial Accounting. Students will complete the three-course HBSO CORe program during the co-op module of their studies.

  This program is 55 weeks long and prepares students with skills to process import/export documents and other forms for clients, according to customs regulations, laws and procedures.

  This program is 59 weeks long and is a program that has specialized international trade courses that will provide students with the necessary skills to be competitive in today’s job market.

  This program teaches students how to design and execute digital marketing strategies for a multitude of social channels. • Early Childhood Education – Montessori

  This program is 80 weeks long and provides the content of the Early Childhood Education Basic program in addition to Montessori Specialization.

• Early Childhood Education Assistant

  After completion of the 14-week program graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic information of health, safety and proper nutrition for young children
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic licensing regulations, safety and hygiene-related to childcare facilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic child development
  • Promote the psychological and physical safety, health and well-being of each child
  • Develop and maintain a warm, caring and responsive relationship with each child
  • Establish and maintain open and cooperative relationships with each child’s family

  Students in this program will develop a broad range of skills through the study and practice of certified courses in order to develop and lead daily age-appropriate activities for children aimed to help promote social, emotional, physical, cognitive and early literacy development. Students learn to observe children and communicate professionally, when appropriate, children’s progress and/or needs with parents, other staff members and individuals involved with the child’s development.

  Graduates are eligible to apply for an Early Childhood Education Basic license from the Ministry for Children and Family Development.

  This program provides the content of the Early Childhood Education Basic program in addition to content specific to Children with Exceptionalities, involving working with children who require extra support in childcare settings.

• Early Childhood Education Infant Toddler

  This program includes toddler and infant childcare courses that give the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based upon the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

• Early Childhood Education Post-Basic (Diploma)

  This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based on the Ministry of Education and Child Care approved curriculum.

• Early Childhood Education (Diploma)

  This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based upon the Ministry for Children and Family Development approved curriculum.

  The diploma program provides the content of the Basic program in addition to Infant & Toddler development, and Children with Exceptionalities, involving working with children who require extra support in childcare settings.

  Students in this program will develop a broad range of skills through the study and practice of certified courses in order to develop and lead daily age-appropriate activities for children aimed to help promote social, emotional, physical, cognitive and early literacy development.   The program focuses on Children with Exceptionalities involving working with children who require extra support in childcare settings. Graduates are able to expand their coverage to Birth to 5 years and are able to apply for an ECE Special Needs Educator License.

• Early Childhood Education Post-Basic Infant & Toddler

  This program is suited for Licensed Early Childhood Educators wishing to expand their skills and specializations.

  This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based upon the Ministry for Children and Family Development approved curriculum.

  The program focuses on Infants and Toddlers allowing graduates to expand their coverage from Birth to 5 years.

• Education Assistant

  Education Assistants support all students in classroom environments and perform duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct services to students or parents. They work with teachers to support students with exceptionalities, and this support may include behaviour management, curriculum implementation, social skills development, personal care and physical/medical assistance.

  The Education Assistant works under the direction of classroom teachers, resource teachers and principals and gives special attention to students with physical, learning or emotional needs by implementing individualized or group instruction in communication skills, life skills, behavioural management techniques and adaptive physical education. They assist in modification of curriculum, assignments and tests to accommodate diverse learners. Education Assistants may attend to and provide personal assistance to students in toileting, positioning, mobility, feeding, grooming and dressing, as well as assist in transferring students to and from wheelchairs, desks, special equipment and work areas.

  NOTE: Students have the option of taking two 90 hour practicums (EA200 and EA210) or one 180 hour practicum (EA220) to fulfill the program work experience hours.

• Montessori Early Childhood Teacher Education

  Students will examine the six major areas of the Montessori curriculum: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, Socials, Art, Music and Movement and how they interrelate. Montessori is designed to foster learning through a holistic approach, where education takes place through movement, connects mind, body and spirit, values collaboration and unfolds through love.

• Early Childhood Education Basic with Co-op

  This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based upon the Ministry of Education and Child Care-approved curriculum.

• Montessori Early Childhood Teacher Education with Co-op

  This program will provide students with current information about the Montessori Philosophy, emphasizing a child-centered educational approach; allowing each child to learn and progress at their own pace through practical experiences and self-discovery.

Healthcare, Wellness, Pharma Programs

• Dental Assistant

  Graduates of the Dental Assistant program will have specialized knowledge, critical thinking and decision-making skills and will have developed and mastered all the technical, professional and interpersonal skills needed to perform within their clinical and administrative scope of practice. Working as part of a dental team students will learn how to assist with dental procedures, provide quality oral care, maintain equipment and supplies manage patient records and ensure that clinical and office procedures run efficiently and effectively.

  This program has been designed to meet the regulations governing certified dental assisting practices as defined by the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to write the National Dental Assisting Board examination.

  Program graduates will be able to work in general and specialty dental practices, hospital dental clinics, community health agencies and educational institutions.

• Health Care Assistant Internationally Educated

  This program is 34 weeks long and is designed for students whose first language is not English. A Health Care Assistant (HCA) are prepared to work in both healthcare facilities and community agencies. In these roles they are important and valued members of the health care team.

• Health Care Assistant Internationally Educated with Co-op

  The HCA Internationally Educated with Co-op Program is designed for the student whose first language is not English. This program provides the student with additional language support by front-loading foundational and functional English language at the beginning of the program and will continue to support academic success throughout the program. The HCA Internationally Educated with Co-op Program is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function effectively as front-line care-givers, and respected members of the healthcare team, in community and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of a health care professional, graduates provide person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients. The ESL support will be provided by a qualified ESL instructor who will work closely with the HCA instructional team to promote student learning.

  Other components to the HCA Program are Basic and Advanced Hospice Palliative Care Training, Crisis Prevention Training, Introduction to RAI Observation Tool Training, Acute Care Skills, Medication Administration Assistance, Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED, Foodsafe, WHMIS and Student Practice Education ‘Core’ Orientation (SPECO). These will be completed during the program and are included in program costs. All of these additional certifications are valued by today’s employers. Students will participate in 8 weeks of clinical and/or practicum training.

  A director/instructor interview may be required.

  The co-operative education portion of this program (600 hours) exceeds the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry educational requirements for registration. Students enrolling in the Health Care Assistant Internationally Educated with Co-op program will be eligible to apply for registration when they have completed all course work and required practice education components of the Health Care Assistant ESL with Co-op program.

• Health Care Assistant

  Health care assistants are valued and important members of the healthcare team who promote and maintain the health, safety, independence, comfort, and well-being of patients.

  The Health Care Assistant (HCA) diploma program equips students with the hands-on skills and knowledge to function effectively as front-line caregivers in community and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of a health care professional, graduates will be able to provide person-centered care that promotes and maintains the physical, emotional, spiritual, cognitive, and social well-being of patients.

  Graduates of the HCA program delivered by Sprott Shaw College are eligible for registration with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry to demonstrate their competence and credentials to work for publicly funded employers in BC.

• Health Care Assistant Upgrade

  This program prepares individuals with previous health care assistant education and experience for practice in BC. It is designed to address individual needs as identified through the Nursing Community Assessment Service (NCAS) HCA Competency Assessment. It enables individuals to review and enhance previously acquired knowledge and upgrade their skills to meet practice requirements so that they may become registered as HCAs in BC with BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.

  The Upgrade Program includes the following:

  1. Comprehensive Theory Review Modules (2 months, 155 hours)
  The theory review component is designed to be completed in a self-paced and self-directed format, with online learning modules and assessments. Students will work at their own pace, and an HCA instructor will be available to answer content-specific questions and to support student progress.

  2. HCA Lab Skills Review and Skills Testing (1 month, 20 hours)
  After completing the theory review, students will be oriented to the skills lab and will work with an HCA instructor for a basic HCA skills refresher before being assessed for a complex care placement.

  3. Supervised Practice Experience Multi-Level/Complex Care (40 hours)
  Students will be assigned to a clinical setting under the supervision of an HCA Clinical Instructor, where the student will be expected to meet program learning outcomes in the practice setting.

• Health Unit Clerk

  The occupational objective of this program is to prepare the student to gain employment in:  hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, public health care agencies and long-term care facilities. In the workplace, they will perform non-clinical tasks usually under the supervision of nursing staff and provide the link between patients, physicians, nursing staff and other departments. Job duties and environments vary by place of employment. Some Hospital Unit Clerks are employed part-time or work evening or weekend shifts.

  The job outlook for qualified unit clerks is very good due to advances in medical technology. According to the Health Careers Center, job opportunities are expected to be plentiful for health unit clerks, with growth mirroring that of all health care professions.

• Medical Office Administrator Accelerated

  This is an accelerated certificate program aimed to enable students to better meet the needs of a medical administrator role in managing and coordinating the scheduling of appointments; compiling patients’ charts; transcribing physicians’ orders; preparing birth and/or death certificates; recording vital signs; receiving new patients; and collecting patient records.

  A typing speed of 50-65 words per minute may also be required for employment. Changes in technology, such as the increasing use of electronic medical records (EMR), means these workers must be comfortable adapting to new software programs. Some employers may require specialized training in EMR systems.

• Medical Office Administrator Health Unit Clerk

  This program combines the basic knowledge of a Medical Office Administrator with the specialized knowledge of a Health Unit Clerk.

• Practical Nursing Access

  Practicing* and certified HCA’s are awarded credit towards their practical nursing program. This full-time diploma program was initiated in response to the need for recognizing past education, training and work experience of applicants to the Practical Nursing program. If applicants have achieved certification in the following programs:

  Health Care Assistant (HCA) or Resident Care Attendant (RCA) or a combined Home Support/Resident Care Attendant (HS/RCA) may be admitted to the access semester of the Practical Nursing program.

  This program includes a practicum placement. This experience within a workplace enables Instructional staff to observe the student in a practice situation while providing the student with the opportunity to gain direct exposure to the chosen career field.

  * 600 Hours of work experience, within the last two years, in a care facility where care is provided to a group of Gerontological clients. Work experience must be verified by an official employer letter. Individualized home care experience is not acceptable.

• Practical Nursing

  Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide nursing services to patients and their families in a variety of hospital, community, residential, and home care environments in collaboration with doctors, physicians, registered nurses, and registered practical nurses.

  The Practical Nursing diploma program equips students with the knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide safe, competent, and ethical care.

• Primary Care Paramedic

  The program is 52 weeks and is ideal for those interested in working in emergency medical services/health profession.

Legal, Policing Programs

• Legal Administrator Accelerated

  This is an accelerated certificate program that supports graduates in being able to have understanding of the vocabulary and processes of law, to handle and format legal correspondence such as deeds, wills, affidavits and briefs, while ensuring that the documents agree with legal procedures and grammatical usage, In some cases Legal Administrators are required to attend court or meetings to take notes or minutes.

  Paralegals are an indispensable member of a legal team. This program provides the training necessary to help in any law office: keyboarding, transcription and computer skills, and a variety of legal subject areas from core modules including Real Estate Law, Criminal Law, Litigation, and Family Law to specialized areas such as Aboriginal Land Title, Canadian Immigration Law, and Intellectual Property Law. Graduates will be well prepared to help a wide range of law offices.

  This program includes practicum placement. This experience within a workplace enables Instructional staff to observe the student in a practice situation while providing the student with the opportunity to gain direct exposure to the chosen career field.

Skilled Trades, Auto, Fire Programs

• Construction Electrician – Level 4

  An Electrician is designated as a Construction Electrician under the Inter-Provincial Red Seal program. This ITA-BC Approved modular program provides opportunities for Electrical Apprentices to gain employable lifetime skills and provides employers with a highly trained and experienced workforce while strengthening British Columbia’s economy.

  Electricians work in a wide variety of buildings and facilities. Since electricity is used for a variety of purposes including climate control, security, and communications, Electricians need to be proficient in many applications of electricity. There are three main settings in which Electricians typically work; Construction, Industrial and Institutional.

  Electricians have many different responsibilities and tasks that they must carry out in their daily work. They assemble, install, alter, test, and maintain electrical systems designed to provide heat, light, power, control, signal, and fire alarms for all types of buildings and premises.

  They ensure that all electrical connections are safe and meet the Canadian Electrical Code requirements. This program gives the student the necessary skills to be competitive in all environments.

  Level 4 is the fourth year theoretical and hands-on training component of the four-year program. Upon successful completion of the Certificate, students will receive their Certification of Apprenticeship. The Certification of Apprenticeship (is a requirement and) qualifies students to write their IP Red Seal Exam.

  Included in the Level 4 program the student will learn high voltage systems, digital electronics, PLC, fire-alarm and security systems, structured cabling systems and CEC. Level 4 will also include a review of the learning objectives from Levels 1-3.

  The designated ITA funding is only applicable for registered active sponsored apprentices.

• Electrical Foundations Harmonized

  The program is 25 weeks that included Level 1, which is the first year theoretical and hands-on training component for the 4-year apprenticeship program. This program is ideal for entry-level trades training – No SkilledTradesBC sponsorship is required. Upon successful completion of the diploma requirements, students will receive certification and a total of 350 hours towards their apprenticeship.

• Electrician Common Core – Level 1 (Accelerated)

  Included in the Level 3 program the student will learn three-phase AC theory, digital electronics, AC/DC motor theory and the Canadian Electrical Code. The designated SkilledTradesBC funding is only applicable for registered active sponsored apprentices

Technology, Networking Programs

• Computer Aided Design Technology

  This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary to work with the software used in design fields such as interior design, architecture and industrial design.

  At the end of this program, the student will have developed a basic understanding and the fundamental skills of: AutoCAD; Revit/BIM, and; SketchUp.

• Cybersecurity

  This program will provide students with fundamental computing systems knowledge while introducing students to the key principles of data and technology that frame and define cybersecurity, concepts, tools and technologies employed in cybersecurity practice in a changing landscape of digital security challenges.

• Cybersecurity with Practicum

  This program will provide students with fundamental computing systems knowledge while introducing students to the key principles of data and technology that frame and define cybersecurity, concepts, tools and technologies employed in cybersecurity practice in a changing landscape of digital security challenges. Graduates will be able to complete certification exams from external assessment agencies.

• Cybersecurity with Co-op

  This program will provide students with fundamental computing systems knowledge while introducing students to the key principles of data and technology that frame and define cybersecurity, concepts, tools and technologies employed in cybersecurity practice in a changing landscape of digital security challenges. Students choosing a practicum or coop stream will be able to engage in hands-on and practical training. Graduates will be able to complete certification exams from external assessment agencies.

Travel, Tourism, Hospitality Programs

• Hospitality Industry Professional with Co-op

  The hospitality industry is one of BC’s leading industries. Students who choose to study this program will be prepared to pursue successful careers at hotels, cruise ships, excursions, wineries, and various other attractions in the tourism and hospitality industry.

  During this 45-week program, students will take the Hospitality Core, Hospitality Today, and Hospitality Service Delivery course as well as 10 weeks of electives that build upon essential business skills. Throughout the program, students will experience hands-on training in courses where they will have the opportunity to apply learned knowledge into real-life scenarios.

  In the Hospitality Core course, students will develop their critical thinking and presentation skills as well as learn the basics of hospitality. In the Hospitality Today course, students will gain an understanding of the general hospitality service standards today. In the Hospitality Service Delivery course, students will build on their general hospitality service standards and earn their FOODSAFE and Guest Service Gold Certificates and become START Restaurant Service Certified. Other earned certifications will depend on the electives taken by the student.

  All Sprott Shaw Hospitality Programs incorporate the AHLEI (American Hotel & Lodging Education Institute) which is an organization recognized worldwide.

• Hospitality Management

  This 91-week program is the most robust out of all our hospitality offerings and includes everything students need to know for the industry. This program encompasses material included in the Hospitality Operations with Co-op program with additional training in management, digital marketing, social media, and online engagement practices.

• Hospitality Operations

  This program is 39 weeks long and is designed to provide students with relevant knowledge, necessary skills and educations, and an understanding of the current trends in the hotel and hospitality industry in order to pursue or enhance employment opportunities

• Hospitality Service with Co-op

  The hospitality industry is one of BC’s leading industries. During this 27-week entry-level program, students will build and develop their general knowledge of the hospitality industry.

  Students will also gain essential workforce entry skills including Serving It Right, Guest Service Gold, and FOODSAFE as well as receive their Restaurant Server Credentials.

• Tourism / Hospitality Management & Business Administration Principles Accelerated
  This program is 52 weeks long and combines the adaptability and general business knowledge of professional business management with the focus and excitement of the Hospitality and Tourism Management diploma.
• Tourism / Hospitality Management & Business Administration Principles Accelerated with Co-op

  This program is 100 weeks long and combines the adaptability and general business knowledge of professional business management with the focus and excitement of the Tourism and Hospitality Management diploma.

• Tourism / Hospitality Management with Practicum

  The two most recent labour market studies in BC have both come to the same conclusion – tourism in BC is a growth industry. There has been speculation that there will be an increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020 due to new jobs and current workers retiring. Although this is great news, it does pose some challenges, not the least of which is establishing a strategy to make sure that BC has enough skilled people in the right place at the right time.

  If you are interested in working in the accommodation industry, positions as a front desk agent, housekeeper or bell person are great ways to get an introduction to this sector. Along with meeting people from around the world, these front-line staff members have the advantage of learning about the various aspects of the hotel business (and an opportunity to climb the corporate ladder).

  For those who are more interested in being behind the scenes, the accommodation industry also requires workers for business and trade-related positions – including accountants, marketers, cooks, bakers and carpenters.

  With thousands of events being hosted at BC properties each year – such as conferences, weddings, seminars and so on – the accommodation sector also requires sales, support and event staff. An integral part of any hotel team includes sales representatives, concierges, event coordinators and others who help bring business to the property and ensure all of the events run smoothly.

  So, whether you’re interested in being on the front lines or behind the scenes, working at a mountain resort, wilderness campground or a cosmopolitan hotel in the heart of a bustling city – a career in this dynamic industry can definitely accommodate you.
